Saturday February 11 - HALA Mandatory Housing Affordability Upzones Workshop

The Seattle Neighborhood Coalition is hosting a workshop on Saturday February 11 for community leaders, organizers and activists who are trying to bring attention to HALA's Mandatory Housing Affordability (MHA) upzones within their neighborhood.  In the largest zoning change in recent history, all urban villages and commercial zones and transit corridors are being upzoned ostensibly to yield 6,000 units of affordable housing in these areas.

The Seattle Neighborhood Coalition wants to empower communities to better understand what is happening related to the zoning changes that will affect their neighborhood and to make their own choices on how to respond to HALA.

This workshop will present various tools and ideas that other neighborhoods have used to get the word out, to broaden outreach, and to respond to what is happening.  It will also be an opportunity to connect with other neighborhoods that have had differing responses and ways of responding to the changes and opportunities that HALA represents.

We will have a panel discussion and Q&A, followed by breakout sessions, that will cover:
  • crafting a message
  • organizational building
  • getting 'technical' land use acumen
  • inclusive outreach to underrepresented communities and renters
  • partnerships
  • communication tools

Some neighborhoods are well organized and have a variety of responses to working with the City on the issue – some are in support of the changes, some are in opposition, some are in partnership to cooperatively make changes to what is proposed. Other neighborhoods are just getting started.  And others are not engaged in the process at all.

This workshop will allow community leaders an initial chance to "become aware and share" and to meet with other neighborhood leaders to make connections and learn from what they are doing.

NOTE: this meeting will start at 8:30am, and there will not be the traditional catered breakfast.  Instead we will have coffee, juices and a continental breakfast that will be by sliding scale donation.

Join us if you have interest in becoming more engaged in your community’s HALA upzoning process.

Please RSVP by replying to this email if you plan to attend.  If you feel that others in your neighborhood are the right people to participate, please invite them.  If you have questions about the program, also let us know by email reply.
The Seattle Neighborhood Coalition (SNC) is pleased to invite you to its next breakfast discussion on Saturday morning, February 11th, 8:30 am, at The Central, 500 30th Ave S. in Seattle's Leschi neighborhood.

Perched at the tip of Leschi Bluff in Seattle's Central District., The Central has breathtaking views of Lake Washington, Mount Rainier, and the Bellevue Skyline.  The Central has free parking, and is a block south of the 14 Metro bus.  A map is here.

For this meeting there will be a continental breakfast and coffee/juices for a sliding scale donation. No one is turned away for lack of funds.

We welcome new members and visitors.  Come hungry for food, information, and an active conversation about our city and the issues that confront it.

See you there.
